Machine Destructions Reminder |
The license renewal fee for a video lottery operator is based on the number of machines licensed as of June 30 of each year.
To avoid paying this fee for a machine that may no longer be operable, an operator must complete and submit a Video Lottery Disposal form to the Lottery. Once the form has been received, the Lottery will arrange for a final inspection of the machine and witness the destruction. If you have machines you need destroyed by June 30, the form must be submitted to the Lottery by June 1, 2023 to allow adequate time to coordinate inspection and internal accounting procedures.
For requests received after June 1, 2023, the Lottery cannot guarantee the request will be processed by June 30 although every effort will be made to accommodate the request.
Copies of the Video Lottery Disposal form and the Declaratory Ruling 95-1 by the South Dakota Lottery Commission regarding machine destruction are available on the Lottery’s website.

| The South Dakota Lottery has begun the process of calculating the Fiscal Year 2024 security amounts based on revenue generated January 1 through March 31, 2023. The required security amounts for FY 2024 will be mailed to video lottery operators in May. Since these required security amounts are due by July 1, we ask operators to be vigilant in providing or updating their security item.
The required security is set forth in Administrative Rule 48:02:05:04(18), and states that each licensed video lottery operator is required to “furnish security to the lottery by July 1 of each year equal to one-eighteenth of the state’s share of estimated annual net machine income derived from the operator’s video lottery machines either by purchase of a surety bond, deposit in cash, or receipt of an irrevocable letter of credit or a certificate of deposit issued by a South Dakota financial institution with the lottery endorsed on it as a payee.”
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Shawna Shaw at 773-5770 or shawna.shaw@state.sd.us. |

| Please remember that anytime the seal is broken on a machine's logic board, you must indicate why in the machine's log book.
Ensuring the accuracy of your log books is an important step in the inspection process. South Dakota Administrative Rule 48:02:10:07 states: "A written maintenance log shall be kept in each video lottery machine located within the main cabinet access area.
Every person, including lottery personnel, who gains entry into any internal space of a video lottery machine must sign the log, indicate the time and date of entry, indicate the mechanical meter readings, and list the areas inspected or repaired.
The maintenance log forms must be obtained through the lottery and retained by operators for a period of three years from the date of the last entry. The maintenance logs must be available for inspection by the lottery upon request." |

Fraudulent Ticket Reminder |
The South Dakota Lottery has recently been made aware of fraudulent video lottery tickets circulating throughout the state. Please remind all staff who cash video lottery tickets and your establishment partners to check the validity of video lottery tickets. These fraudulent tickets can often look legitimate, so it’s important to remain vigilant.
Remember to validate video lottery tickets on your site controllers to ensure that they are legitimate. |
